Good News For Halle Berry And...Diabetics!!!

Good news for the world's most beautiful diabetic came yesterday as the FDA approved the first inhalable version of insulin. "Exubera," is the first new way of delivering insulin since the discovery of the hormone in the 1920s. Pfizer jointly developed the drug and dispenser with Sanofi-Aventis and Nektar Therapeutics. It should be available to patients by midyear.
Diabetics with either type of the disease could use the rapid-acting inhaled insulin before or after meals to manage their blood sugar levels. However, the drug would not replace the longer-acting insulin injections that some diabetics, particularly those with Type 1 diabetes, need to take in the morning or before bed.

It won't be cheap though. Injectable insulin costs between $1 and $1.50 daily whereas Exubera will cost between $4 and $5 daily. Just a little bit more than a Sundae at Breusters!!! If you want to learn more about Diabetes go to our podcast and listen to our last show with guest Phil Southerland, president of Team Type 1 Cycling. He is such an inspiration to diabetic and non-diabetics!!!

Chitin and Chitosan Supplements Filled With HOT AIR!!!

You may have seen an ad for Chitin or Chitosan which is made from the shells of shrimp, crabs and other seafood as Fat Trappers, Fat Absorbers and Fat Magnets. Dr. Shafran aka "Dr. Fitness" says Fat Chance. These claims vary from incredible weight loss, reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels, to healing infection and lowering your risk of cancer.

Not only is their no scientific evidence to support these prodigous claim but the Federal Trade Commission won a $8.3 million dollar judgment against SlimAmerica, maker of Chitin, for violating federal consumer protection laws with SlimAmerica's chitin claims. There are also other pending lawsuits. The other three lawsuits--against Enforma (makers of Fat Trapper and Exercise In A Bottle), Danmark Inc. (Chitosol and Chitosan Plus) and Television Marketing Group Inc. (FTF--Fight the Fat)--go to trial in June. There is also a potential risk for taking these seemingly innocuous potions!!!!

Manufacturers don't have to divulge the source of their products' chitin or chitosan, which can vary widely from product to product and could come from multiple sources. Some makers warn that consumers with seafood allergies should avoid their products derived from crustacean shells, but many manufacturers do not. Here is a great article to read further!!!

Which Exercise Products Should You Buy And Which Exercise Products Should You Avoid

As you know the Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy podcast is the funniest weight loss and fitness radio show on the internet. Great News! Our new and improved podcast is commercial free.

This week Doctor Fitness gives you the skinny on separating fact from fiction when it comes to As Seen On Tv weight loss and exercise gadgets. Here are the Doctor's tips to avoid being ripped off by those late night infomercials. #1. The cost of these products are too little. A commercial quality treadmill at a gym costs from $4000 to $5000. $1000 sounds like a lot of money for a product from TV but when it comes to this kind of exercise equipment it really isn't that much. #2. Don't buy any piece of equipment without trying it out. That way you'll see if it's sturdy and if it will fit your body. #3. Don't believe the hype. those models demonstrating the product didn't get that way by using that product. #4. Instead of buying a big piece of exercise equipment start a walking program - all you need are good sneakers, a heart rate monitor, an mp3 player or an Ipod and a partner. Or if you don't like walking buy an exercise ball, some bands or an exercise dvd or video. #5. If you insist on buying a treadmill or other piece of cardio equipment you are much better served by buying a piece of used or refurbished commercial equipment.

Will Human Growth Hormone Make Me Look Like Arnold Schwarzeneggar?

Human Growth Hormone is being touted as the key to the fountain of youth and it is commonly associated with Anti-Aging. It all started back in 1990 when Dr. Daniel Rudman published a study on the effects of Growth Hormone on lean body mass and fat tissue in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Judith Reichman does a fine job explaining the reality of using Human Growth Hormone, who is it really for, and the dangers associated with it's use.

What is growth hormone? Does it really work to stop aging?Growth hormone is produced in the pituitary gland of the brain. Once released, it induces the liver to make insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and this hormone then triggers the growth of bones and body tissues. HGH is especially important for normal growth in children. Indeed, most of our knowledge of hGH comes from studying children who lack the hormone, and as a result suffer from stunted growth and development. In adults, a true medical deficiency of growth hormone may result from disease, tumors, surgery or radiation that destroys critical areas in the pituitary. This then leads to weight gain, cholesterol abnormalities, heart disease, fatigue, decreased immune response, loss of muscles and osteoporosis.

Dr. Shafran thinks that Human Growth Hormone can be very dangerous as a supplement and should only be given in very special cases. There are many ways to increase the levels of Human Growth Hormone(HGH) naturally in the human body. Here are some suggestions that are much safer:
1. Strength Training
2. Amino Acids (Arginine, Ornithine, Lysine, Glutamine)
3. Vitamin (Niacin)
4. 25% Reduction of overall calories
5. Decrease in Body Fat

Dr. Shafran Says Think Twice Before Taking Cough Medicine

Your child can't sleep because of a nasty cough due to a cold. So you like every caring parent who doesn't want their kid to suffer, you go to the local pharmacy and pick up some cough medicine. But are you really helping? According to Dr. Edward Schulman, representative from the cough guidelines committee for the American College of Chest Physicians, you are probably better off drinking lots of fluids and having chicken soup. Over-the-counter cough syrups generally contain drugs in too low a dose to be effective, or contain combinations of drugs that have never been proven to treat coughs, said Dr. Richard Irwin, chairman of a cough guidelines committee for the American College of Chest Physicians.

Diet Pills, Diet Patches & Diet Potions. Dr. Fitness Separates Fact From Fiction!

Another hilariously informative Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy show, the funniest weight loss and fitness radio show on the internet. This week Doctor Fitness gives you the skinny on separating fact from fiction when it comes to magic diet pills, diet potions and diet patches. Here's the Doctor's 8 tips to avoid being ripped off by these so called magic diet pills. #8. Google search the ingredients back to reputable sites like www.fda.gov or www.webmd.com. #7. Remember that people get paid to endorse products. And doctors are people too. #6. Make sure the group that is doing the so called unbiased study has no monetary affiliation with the product. #5. Everyone wants to believe their is some magic to help them lose weight and these unscrupulous marketers exploit that. #4. Don't settle for anecdotal evidence as validation these pills actually work. #3. Look for double blind studies that last for years not 4-8 weeks. Also make sure those labs are independent. #2. Read the labels carefully. Don't get distracted by inferred endorsements, slick doctor quotes or phony before and after pictures. #1. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true. It probably is.

Here's a quote by yogamaster BKS Iyengar that sums up my position on this craziness. "Physical health is not a commodity to be bargained for. It cannot be swallowed in the form of drugs or pills. It has to be earned through sweat."

Emotional Eating....Here are some tips Lindsay Lohan!

I found this great article by Linda H. Lamb looking at how interwoven our emotions are tied to our eating behaviors. Stress and depression play a major role in our choices for food as well as our feelings of happiness. I thought this article had plenty of depth, examples of emotional eating, and more importantly, some great practical tips for overcoming emotional eating!!!!
TIPS TO HELP YOU GAIN CONTROL OVER EMOTIONAL EATING
_There's always a bit of time between the moment you decide to eat something and the moment you actually put it into your mouth. Use that time to ask yourself this question: "What am I really hungry for?"
_Try to deal honestly with the answer to that question, especially if the food you crave is a high-calorie, low-nutrition diet buster. Could it be that you're not really hungry, but rather anxious, stressed out, lonely, angry, bored or in the mood to celebrate?
_Try an alternative to eating as a better way to deal with your feelings. Examples: If you're celebrating or rewarding yourself, enjoy a movie or buy yourself something new to wear. If you're lonely, call a friend. If you're stressed, take a brisk walk to work off steam.
_To get a handle on your emotional eating patterns, use a little notebook to write down everything you eat. Include details such as when you eat, how quickly you finish and what you feel at the time.
_Some foods might be such powerful triggers for overeating, you shouldn't keep them in the house. Identify other triggers - such as TV commercials - and avoid them.
_Remember that exercise is a great way to elevate your mood, if you tend to eat when you're down.
_When you do give in to a craving, pay attention to portion size. For example, go get a scoop of ice cream at Baskin-Robbins, rather than buying a half-gallon of ice cream at the grocery store.
_Occasional splurges won't ruin you. Don't beat yourself up over them. Say, "OK, I had that Twix bar, but now it's back to eating sensibly."
_Get enough sleep. You'll tend to eat mindlessly when you're fatigued.
_Eat a healthy, balanced diet and don't go too long between meals and snacks. You're more likely to make bad food choices when you feel you're starving.
_Parents, don't make your kids clean their plates; let them stop when they're satisfied. And find other ways to reward and motivate children, rather than food - including hugs and comments such as "I'm so proud of you."

6 Tricks To Keep Your Motivation High All Year Long. These Tips Are So Good Tony Robbins Would Use Them If He Was Overweight!

The Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy podcast, is without a doubt, the funniest weight loss and fitness radio show on the internet. This week Doctor Fitness gives you the skinny on his 6 favorite motivation techniques that will guarantee you will keep your New Year's resolution to lose weight this year.

Did you know 79% of people who make New Year's resolutions fail each year most within a month? You will not be one of those if you follow the Doctor's advice.

Here are the Doctor's tips. #6. You need a partner as your insurance policy to make sure you do not quit. #5 Your goal has to be a top 3 non-negotaible priority. That means you schedule things around this goal not vice versa. #4. Set up your long term goal and work backwards on a timeline to figure out your short term goals. And write them down. #3. Give yourself a long time line to achieve your goals. For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds. plan on losing only 1 pound a week. That would mean you give yourself 20 weeks to achieve that goal, right? Wrong! give yourslef 30 weeks to achieve that goal. #2. Recognize ahead of time that motivation is cyclical. Somedays you will feel more motivated than others. This is where your partner is important. hopefully your partner will pick you up when you are down and you will pick your partner up when she is down. #1. Do Not Quit. You made a promise to your partner that you would not quit so don't break that promise. If you need more support please feel free to e-mail me at adam@drfitnessandthefatguy.com and I will give you the push you need to keep you on track.
