How to Eat a Pomegranate from the Fat Guy

My first experience with a pomegranate happened when I was in college. I had a roommate who would eat these things all the time. He would sit on his bed with a little paring knife and suck the seeds out one by one like a little monkey.

It was messy, it might have been healthy (who knew that at the time?). But this guy would go at his pomegranate like I go at a slab of ribs.

Now with all the attention to pomegranites in the news I decided to try eating one at home. I figured with the interet around I could research a more efficient way of getting those tart, tasty, anti-oxidant filled seeds out. And sure enough I did.

You can now be enjoying all those crunchy red graplets in just a matter of minutes. Here's how...

This is what you need 1) A pomegranate 2) A big bowl of water 3) A knife 4) Your fingers

First with your knife slice the pokey end off the top

Next with your knife score the skin of the pomegranate from top to bottom as if you were making it look like a pumpkin. You don't want to cut too deep and damage those magical seeds. Just deep enough to peel each section back a little later on.

Now place your pomegranate in your bowl of water. This is the breakthrough. This is the killer app.

While keeping the pomegranate in the water and using just your fingers gently peel a section apart. This is the epiphany monet. You should notice something that will literally change your life and make pomegrante's a bigger part of your life. Yes, it's true the seeds sink helplessly to the bottom of the bowl while the other nasty stuff you don't eat, floats to the top.

Keep working until you have a huge pile of seeds at the bottom and then skim all the non-edible stuff off the top and throw it away.

Now drain the water and you have a pile of crunchy, juicy, anti-oxidant filled pomegranate seeds to enjoy.

Remember these babies stain like nobodies business. So be careful.

Teflon: A Likely Carcinogenic?

Perfluorooctanoic acid, also known as "C-8" is the chemical that has everyone including a scientific panel from the EPA up in arms and should be considered a likely carcinogen. This chemical is used in the manufacturing of Teflon and other nonstick and stain-resistant products that most americans cook with. Wilmington, Del.-based DuPont Co., owner of the Teflon brand, is the sole producer of Perfluorooctanoic acid in North America.
Some members of the review panel disagreed with the majority view that PFOA should be classified as a "likely carcinogen," a finding that went beyond the EPA's own determination that there was only "suggestive evidence" from animal studies that PFOA and its salts are potential human carcinogens.

9 Natural Ways To Fight "Gout"

Here are Dr. Shafran's natural approach suggestions for leaving Gout behind you rather than in your joints!!
Nutrition:
1. Achieve and maintain an ideal body weight.
2. Eat fresh, unrefined, and unprocessed foods. Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, soy, beans, seeds, nuts, olive oil, and cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, and halibut).
Eat unsweetened cherries (canned, fresh, or frozen). Cherries lower uric acid levels and can prevent gout attack. Blueberries, blackberries, and other deeply pigmented berries are also helpful.
3. Eliminate purine-containing foods, such as organ meats, shellfish, brewers yeast (beer), bakers yeast (baked goods and bread), anchovies, sardines, herring, mackerel.
4. Avoid alcohol, animal fats, red meat, poultry, sugar, dairy products, refined foods, fried foods, junk foods, and caffeine.
5. Drink 1/2 of body weight in ounces of water daily (e.g., a 150 lb person would drink 75 oz of water).
Supplements:
6. Quercetin - Take 200 to 400 mg daily between meals. Quercetin inhibits uric acid production.
7. Bromelain - Take 200 to 400 mg daily between meals. This enzyme found in pineapples is anti-inflammatory. For best results, take with quercetin.
8. Vitamin E - Take 400 IUs daily.
9. Flaxseed oil - Take 1 tbs daily.

Scientists Say Eat Foods That Smell Good!

Ok, I know what you're thinking....chocolate brownies, cookies, bread from the oven. But this isn't what researchers Stephen A. Goff and Harry J. Klee report in Friday’s issue of the journal Science had in mind. Indeed, the odors from foods ranging from garlic and onions to ginger and strawberries may be nutritional signals that the human nose has learned to recognize. Read this article and find out why the chemical cis-3-Hexenal is so important.

Madonna, Moms, and Antibiotics: Are They Doing More Harm?

I remember when parents were afraid to have their kids watch Madonna or her videos. Do you remember when she received so much notoriety over her "pepsi" commercial. Well, Madonna is now a mommy and apparently not a threat to "society" anymore. But are moms pulling the trigger too soon or having too much influence over their doctors when it comes to prescribing antibiotics when the little one is not feeling well even before they know if the illness is virus or bacteria related. Here is a great article that raises some very important issues about the dangers and appropriate uses of antibiotics! The government has a new strategy for reducing the unnecessary use of antibiotics: Persuade mothers to stop pestering pediatricians to write prescriptions for runny noses. Health officials have already hammered on doctors to quit dispensing antibiotics in situations where they are practically guaranteed not to work, such as common colds. A straight-to-Mom campaign is next.

Great Gout News For "The Fat Guy"!!!!

My co-host will be happy to hear that some new drugs are in the pipeline to treat the painful inflammatory condition that usually afflicts the joints of men ages 30 -50. This is also great news for gout sufferers since no new drugs other than allopurinol have been produced to treat this inflammatory arthridity since 1964, when the World's Fair was in Flushing Meadows, NY. Febuxostat, which is awaiting approval from U.S. regulators, would be the first new medicine in four decades for gout, which is becoming more common in this country. Gout has long been associated with rich diets, and afflicted such figures in history as Benjamin Franklin, Henry VIII and Alfred Lord Tennyson.
