American Idol's "Sanjaya" Is "Cooking?"

This guy can't be stopped and as the great ABC sportscaster, Howard Cosell, would say.... could....go....all....the....way!!!! Good luck Sanjaya but did you know that this guy can also cook? I think he has been listening to our show to get my salad recipes and if you want more great recipes check out this blog Jeena's Kitchen for healthy great recipes!!!!!!

We had a lot of fun on this week's show. I am so happy Kathie Larkin was back with us from her acting work. She was off to New York to cut more shows for Real Moms, Real Stories, Real Savvy. She also did some body double work for none other than Alyssa Milano. That should give you some idea on how gorgeous she is!!!

Our first guest this week was the amazing Jimmy Moore from South Carolina. We had Jimmy on since the Fat Guy discovered his awesome blog which is dedicated to helping people lose weight in a low carbohydrate way. His blog is called www.livinlavidalowcarb.com and you should definitely check it out. He has lost close to 200 pounds over the last several years and we really got a chance to talk to him about his struggles and the moment he decided that it was time to lose the weight. He will inspire you and he is a great dude!!!! I like to present successful weight loss stories where the weight loss has been sustained over years even though I don't support Low Carbohydrate diets. I think there is so much confusion in the press about carbohydrates in general and the last thing I want to do is to steer people away from fruits and veggies....which are....carbohydrates. Jimmy was very clear that he eats plenty of fruits and veggies even though he is on a low carb diet. The main focus should always be eating the right carbohydrates, the right fats, and the right proteins!!!!

Next up we had the very bright Dr. David Katz who you may have seen on ABC News or in the New York Times where he contributes regularly. He wrote a great book called the Flavour Point Diet which examines the neuroscience of appetite. The Flavour Point Diet first uses flavor themes to help control the overall variety of flavors in their typical day, meal, and snack; and then guides readers to achieve the same thing at the level of individual foods by choosing those items that avoid or minimize unnecessary flavor additions. Dr. Katz also teaches at Yale schools of medicine, public health, and nursing and he co-directs a 1 year post-doctoral residency program in Integrative Medicine at his center in Derby, Ct. Dr. Katz had A LOT to say but we ran out of time and we can't wait to get him back on the air and talk more about his books. He is doing lots of wonderful things for adults and kids in fighting obesity with his Turn the Tide Foundation, Inc. Reversing the Obesity Trend, a research foundation dedicated to advancing practical, real-world strategies for empowering the American family to resist the ravages of our obesigenic environment.

Lastly, we had Jason Thunstrom, The Director of Corporate Communications and Public Relations for Lifetime Fitness. I talked about Jason and Lifetime Fitness earlier in the week but this place is so awesome, I gotta say it again. GO check out this place and I know you won't be dissapointed. Open 24 hours and clean as can be!!!! Big thumbs up!!!!!!

Make sure you listen to this Sunday night's show where we have VH-1's Celebrity Fit Club's Marisa Peer, The Cheeracise Girls talks to us about getting fit and cheering us on in the same breath, and Bob Fox from Speed Stacks tells us about the World Championships in Speed Stacking Coming in a couple of weeks and plenty more on Dr. Fitness and The Fat Guy Live on Sunday's 7 - 8 PM Eastern.

What Does The Flavour Point Diet, LivinLa VidaLowCarb, and The BEST Health Club, "Lifetime Fitness", Have In Common?

They appeared on "Dr. Fitness and The Fat Guy," Sunday night. T.V. Hottie and now a regular on our show, Kathie Larkin, from "Real Moms, Real Stories, Real Savvy", joined us in the studio for an action-packed hour of laughs and great information. Read More about the show in my blog later today!!!!!
Dr. Fitness and The Fat Guy started off Sunday by visiting my favorite "Fitness Resort," LifeTime Fitness, in Alpharetta, Georgia. The just opened here in Georgia 3 months ago but they are all over the country and in 22 cities. If you want to get a "Wow" experience, go drive down North Point Parkway in Alpharetta, Ga and you will come to Dr. Fitness' Shangri-La. You can see the beautifully designed structure and of course, the kid in me, loved to see the amazing pool and water slides from the outside. If you go there with children, bring your check book because they are going to want to jump in. The Fat Guy got a kick out of the sign in the front that says no hand guns. We spoke to Jason Thunstrom, Director of Corporate Communications and Public Relations For Lifetime Fitness on the show about the sign and apparently in some cities you can carry a hand gun. Jason was great on the show and I think we might have a Dunk Tank installed for kids to throw stuff at the Fat Guy. Jason has to talk to the corporate big wigs to get it approved. But I think the Fat Guy felt better about no hand guns!!! All he needs is another excuse to not work out, "I might get shot at the gym." Dr. Fitness and The Fat Guy toured the facility and even the Fat Guy who hates gyms, was impressed with the services, cleanliness, locker rooms, unbelievable yoga/pilates studio, spinning facility, cardio and weights beyonds the eyes can see, and the indoor/outdoor pools. We both share the same opinion about the lack of follow-up health facilities provide after you sign up to their facility. At least, LifeTime Fitness has a 30, 60, 90 day system in place to check on their members to see if they are using the facility and if they are happy. That is definitely a step in the right direction! Our Tour Guide, Jaye Lorton, was very nice, very attractive, and very generous with her time to show us around. She genuinely loves the Lifetime Fitness concept and it shows. Monica, the manager who was their at the time, was also very nice to us and I think she offered The Fat Guy as smoothie!!! The Staff reminds me of being at the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency. Anyway, Go check this company out wherever you are or move to a city that has one. Its worth it!!!!! They get big thumbs up from me and I know I am going to join with Nanci and the kids!!!!!
Check out my blog later today when I talk about our last show with the amazing Jimmy Moore, The very bright, Dr. David Katz and my top tips on things you can do today to lose weight tomorrow.

A Little Vino and Berry Juice Will Add Years To Your Life!!!!

Nothing new here but more solid information about the benefits of berries and berry juice. According to a new study by scientists at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, purple grape juice is now your best bet for preventing heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and a host of other chronic ailments.
What's the secret ingredient that makes juice such a potent weapon against disease?

Well, all juices contain chemical compounds known as polyphenols -- a variety of antioxidant that, when consumed, helps to remove harmful free radicals from the body. Although exact information about how antioxidants combat illness is not forthcoming, a number of studies place them at the forefront of protecting the body from free radicals, molecules that destroy cells and allow diseases to develop. The findings from the University of Glasgow come on the heels of the recent U.S.-based Kame project, which suggested that volunteers who drank three or more glasses of juice a week could reduce the risk of Alzheimer's by 76 percent, compared with those who drank juice less than once a week.

Alan Crozier, professor of plant biochemistry and human nutrition, who led the study, he claimed that "there is absolutely no difference between juice made from concentrate and freshly-squeezed juice, as far as antioxidants are concerned."What matters is the fruit used to begin with: Purple grapes, cranberries and pomegranates do a good deal more to protect us from disease than oranges and pineapples, according to Crozier.

Chinese "Restaurant" Food Lays A Big Egg Roll As Healthy Food!!!

Bonnie Liebman did a report released Tuesday claiming that Chinese Food in restaurants across america are loaded with tons of calories and sodium. "I don't want to put all the blame on Chinese food," said Bonnie Liebman, nutrition director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which did a report released Tuesday. "Across the board, American restaurants need to cut back on calories and salt, and in the meantime, people should think of each meal as not one, but two, and bring home half for tomorrow," Liebman said. The average adult needs around 2,000 calories a day and 2,300 milligrams of salt, which is about one teaspoon of salt, according to government guidelines. In some ways, Liebman said, Italian and Mexican restaurants are worse for your health, because their food is higher in saturated fat, which can increase the risk of heart disease.
Bonnie Liebman often writes for the Nutrition Action Newsletter and I really like her information. Is there anything new here about "Chinese Food" in the U.S.? Not really but I did find this interesting from the article:
A plate of stir-fried greens has 900 calories and 2,200 milligrams of sodium. And eggplant in garlic sauce has 1,000 calories and 2,000 milligrams of sodium. "We were shocked. We assumed the vegetables were all low in calories," Liebman said. Also surprising were some appetizers: An order of six steamed pork dumplings has 500 calories, and there's not much difference, about 10 calories per dumpling, if they're pan-fried.
I don't eat Chinese food often but when I do go, I go strong with the Vegetable Bean Curd Soup for Two, add some rice and skip the crunchy noodles. I also go for the Singapore Noodles that has a twinge of curry spices, only vegetables and stir fried tofu. You can save a boat load of calories that way but I still have to watch the portions!!!!!

Insurance Company Lowers Premiums As You Shrink Your BMI

Sounds like a good idea, right? The program by Phoenix Cos. Inc. offers discounts up to 20 percent on life insurance policies to customers whose BMI is verified by a doctor to be 19 to 25.
BMI is a ratio of body fat that takes height and weight into account. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines obesity as a BMI of 30 or more; people between 25 and 30 are considered overweight.
Out of all of the benchmarks to measure health, picking BMI is not my favorite. I know it is quick, cheap, and an easy biometric, and I like the fact that this insurance company is trying to incentivise health, but it doesn't give us the whole picture. Some of the people who are lifting weights, making lifestyle modifications, not smoking, might miss out on the premium discount when then could be in perfect health. We need more benchmarks for measurements like Body fat analysis and Cardiopulmonary Function!!! Dr. Fitness still gives thumbs up to The Phoenix Cos. for taking a step in the right direction.

Switching gears for a second, I am totally addicted to a great snack item I found at Publix called Pretzel Crisps . These things rock.... and rock hard. They come in different flavors like bagels, but I highly urge you to try "Everything" and "Garlic." You better buy two bags to start off with because you will knock off the first bag before you can say yumyumdumdum. Calorie content is low/serving.....IF YOU CAN STICK TO THE SERVING PORTIONS....I couldn't!!!!!

Next up we had the smoking hot Jennifer Nicole Lee, Ms. Bikini America, and the host of Bikini Booty Camp in South Miami Beach, Florida in September 2007. She challenged the Fat Guy to lose 10 pounds and he could join her in South Beach. He mentioned something about Jennifer greasing him up and chasing him....I hate when his subconscious comes to life sometimes!!!!!

Lastly, we had Jim Jones, not the dead Rev. Jim Jones, but the creator of www.runfatboy.net, a cool web site that offers beginners a simple starting point for getting in shape. Dr. Fitness and The Fat Guy Invade Podcamp Atlanta at Emory University!!!

Lee and I had a great time being one of the group discussion leaders at Podcamp Atlanta this weekend hosted by Penny Haynes with 1stpod.com , Amber Rhea and Rusty Tanton, founders of the Georgia Podcast Network. Amber and Rusty invited us to share our experiences with podcasting and all of the wonderful things that have happened to us from podcasting our show. We invited them to our studio and they have become great friends of ours. You can check out their web site at They all did such a wonderful job organizing this event and they had great prizes to give out as well as awesome "healthy" food to boot. The Fat Guy told me to lay low and that he had everything taken care of until we were about to go on and in typical "Fat Guy" fashion, I hear "Do you wanna start this?" We did fine and I know the people learned a lot from our experiences. The biggest take away from the weekend was meeting a lot of smart people who realize this new wonderful technology and everyone is still trying to figure it out!!! There was definitely a wonderful sense of community where you feel everyone trying to lend a hand to help out. I wanted to mention some cool people we ran into and their web sites to check out. I am sure there are some I am leaving out so I apologize. Carter Harkins with Crowdabout.us, Mark Juliano with talkshoe.com, Jeff Haynie with Hakano.com , Stephen Eley with escapepod.org , Kenneth Brown with E3clink.com, Joseph Polk with mtbcast.com, Shannon Clute with noircast.net , Michael Bailey with mobasoft.com, and John Naugle with ATLpeace.org.

I know for sure we will be attending more Podcamps around the country!!!!!

Dr. Fitness' Hero, Jack LaLanne, Challenged To A Fight!!!!

Ok, This is one crazy story but I had to blog about it anyway. Apparently 91 year old Maine snowbird Roland Fortin challenge my main man Jack LaLanne, 92, to a boxing match. Fortin, former "cut man" for retired boxing champ Joey Gamache, said the idea for the four-round bout was hatched at the Tropical Gym in Pompano Beach, where Fortin works out during the winter in Florida. I don't think Jack will fight him but I hope he does and kicks his butt!!!! I would be his corner man!!!!! Check out the rest of the story!!!!!

Holy Water!!!! Is G-d On The Take?

Holy water is now being sold at stores near you!!!! Here's the good news!!!! It is filtered via reversed osmosis which Dr. Fitness gives two thumbs up!!!! Just like Dasani and Aquafina. The process of reverse osmosis gets rid of a lot of crap that regular filtration doesn't like trihalomethanes, cyclobenzenes, nasty bacteria like cryptosporidium. But if this doesn't smell like a scam, I don't know what does!!!
Brian Germann who is producing the water, has clergy bless the water before it is distributed. It looks like we are do for another sequel of the movie "Oh,G-d" however George Burns is no longer with us so who would play G-d? My vote is for the Fat Guy!!!! You can view the rest of this story at this link

Britney Spears Shaves Head To Get On Dr. Fitness and The Fat Guy!!!!

Rumor has it!!! Britney is crying out for attention....from the Fat Guy!!!! Ok, maybe not but if she needed a hug from Dr. Fitness, I would give her one!!! We had a Canadian Love Fest on our radio show last night since both our guests came from the Great White North!!!! We first had on Canadian Diet Guru, Dr. Stanley Bernstein, affectionately known as "Dr. B." He was a lot of fun and discussed his philosophy of helping thousands of people lose weight. I liked him because he is one physician who is fighting the good fight against obesity without crap diet pills and liposuction but with good old fashion Behavior Modifications and "Tough Love." He has a bunch of clinics all over Canada and is now moving into the states with places in Florida and Virginia. Check out his book, "Dr. B's Simply Sensational Diet Recipe Book" and his web site at www.drbdiet.com

Our second guest was Canadian Hot Mom Sharon Mann. She has a show on Discovery Channel's FitTV called "In Shape With Sharon Mann." She was a Four Time Canadian Aerobics Champ and now she's a fitness TV star and recently put out a DVD called "The Works With Sharon Mann." I haven't watched it but she has a real peppy personality and was a lot of fun on our show. Check out her web site at www.SharonMann.com
Listen to our complete show at http://weightlossradio.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=188945

I was completely blown away yesterday by a new....I can't even call it a gym because it is more like a resort here in Georgia. "Lifetime Fitness" built a facility like I have never seen before. First of all it looks like a fitness palace for the entire family....marble everywhere, clean, clean, clean, fitness equipment beyond the eyes can see....indoor/outdoor pools with water slides, lane pools for the exerciser, lots of Jacuzzis, saunas....I am telling you this place is "The Greatest Fitness Facility" I have seen in the states.

Dr. Fitness and The Fat Guy appeared today on a radio show based out of Chicago called "Conversations with Beth & Dan". They were awesome hosts and Beth Aldrich also has a TV show called "For Her Information," magazine, newsletter and you can check it out at www.forherinformation.com We had fun or I should say I had fun making fun of the Fat Guy.
